deleterious mutation

  • variation in dominance levels is less documented
  • both theoretical (Bourguet 1999) and experimental arguments (Phadnis and Fry 2005) suggest that strongly deleterious mutations (lethals, semilethals) are recessive while weakly detrimental ones are nearly codominant
  • one can thus assume that h and s are inversely related: h = 1 / (2 + 48s)
  • for a similar treatment see Higgins and Lynch 2001
  • this expression is such that h = 1 / 2 for s = 0, while h = 0.02 for lethals
  • roughly reflecting values estimated in Drosophila (Mukai et al. 1972)
