• pollen biogenesis appears to be the major bottleneck revealing even those mitochondrial defects that do not become apparent in the vegetative phases of plant development
• this may well be related to the dramatic reduction in mtDNA amounts during pollen biogenesis that was recently uncovered (Wang et al. 2010)

• the chloroplast genome of plants ... seems to be largely immune against insertions of DNA from foreign sources
• this difference is simply related ... alternatively, to the lack of recombination owing to the absence of double-strand DNA break repair mechanisms (Kohl and Bock 2009)
