- contrary to suggestions based on human genome-wide association study findings, we found substantial numbers of pairwise epistatic interactions involving many more loci than show single-locus effects that account for an important portion of trait variation
- this is likely due to the genetic structure of our experimental population where allele frequencies are intermediate
- this is critical since epistasis is known to produce predominantly additive and dominance variance when relatively rare alleles are involved
