stochastic community dynamics

Kiester AR, Lande R & Schemske DW 1984 Models of coevolution and speciation in plants and their pollinators. Am Nat 124:220-243.

  • random genetic drift in each species produces stochastic coevolutionary forces on the other species
  • rapid divergence between plant populations, and between pollinator populations with absolute preferences, may then occur by random genetic drift interacting with coevolutionary forces around the line of deterministic equilibria
  • stochastic coevolution of the mean phenotypes can be analyzed using the theory of Gaussian diffusion processes (Lande 1980, 1981)
  • rapid stochastic diversification between plant populations, and between pollinator populations with absolute preferences, can occur if the populations of either species are not very large
